The Nishkam Civic Association (NCA) recognises the importance of volunteering. It remains at the forefront with its volunteers in advancing community and economic wellbeing, promoting interfaith, intercultural, intercommunity dialogue and championing social justice and inclusion.
As a matter of fact, the development of the £7 million Nishkam Centre was contributed to by approximately 110,000 hours of volunteering worth some £1.5 million during construction.
Translated into English “Nishkam Sewa” literally means selfless service. The Sikh tradition of Nishkam Sewa stems back to the times of the Sikh Gurus, who promoted the selfless service for all of God’s creation without distinction and expectation of any reward.
The Nishkam Centre serves diverse communities with volunteers from an array of faith and non-faith denomination, our commitment to Nishkam Sewa remains embedded in every area of the organisation – this is the main factor in our success – our desire to serve others, selflessly, beyond any imaginable expectations.
As a result of our volunteer commitment the Nishkam Centre was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2010 and more recently March 2012 the esteemed Investors in Volunteers Standard for the highest levels of excellence in promoting active volunteering to benefit local communities.
Volunteers have remained the backbone of the organisation and are seen as one of the most essential, unique and invaluable components of The Nishkam Centre. They assist with coordinating projects & events, delivering training & education and offering guidance & support for the local and global community.
Active volunteering (Sewa) is an integral part of the beliefs of the Sikh faith and can be seen as the most essential, unique and invaluable parts of the faith based NCA, guiding and supporting the work of employed staff and external partners.
