The First Nice-A Project
NICE-A is aimed at supporting both employed and unemployed members of the community who require assistance, training and coaching to take the next steps in their journeys. Through this programme, participants were able to develop their career through promotion, develop through a change in career, or develop a new enterprise/business to achieve their goals and aspirations. The Programme consisted of various workshops and individual mentoring sessions by professionally trained tutors.
Raj Sagoo, a general branch manager, was one of the participants on the NICE-A Course. “It was a course that my wife enrolled me on, actually, I was quite sceptical about these things. I turned up to the launch event and I thought, you know what, it’s interesting. I turned up to the next workshop, and as it progressed I actually became quite engrossed in it. It was actually quite surprising, some nice debates, and the people around you were in the same situation – where you’re in a bit of a rut. One of the great things was I actually lost 1 and a half stones because that was one of the things I needed to do better myself. So I would definitely recommend it!”
Satwinder Kaur, a mother of two, also participated in the programme. “I now know what I want and have the belief that I can achieve what I want. That is down to the Nishkam Centre, the NICE-A team and the volunteers who took time out to help people like us who just need a bit of encouragement sometimes to overcome barriers and to actually take that step to go forward. I would highly recommend it to anyone.” Satwinder Kaur has now started the foundations for a new enterprise.
The final event was held in celebration of everyone’s success. All of the mentors, volunteers, participants were content with what they had achieved and families also came to support their loved ones. Ajit Singh, one of the creators of the NICE-A Programme was inspired by this journey. “It has been a privilege to support individuals on their journey in a very practical and successful way. We now look forward to working with the next group of participants.”
Bhai Sahib Bhai Mohinder Singh OBE KSG, Chair of the Nishkam Centre, also attended the event to give words of guidance to the participants:
“Consciousness to me is – are you awake? Awake and aware to reality? We are informed that any thought that enters your mind is capable of sewing a seed. So you can have thoughts of love, you can have thoughts of revenge and there will be a crop because of these thoughts…”

Senior Women’s Enterprise Empowerment Project (SWEEP)
“With financial support from RBS Inspiring Enterprise, this project empowered 10 senior women to create 10 new enterprises.”
The NCA’s SWEEP project was set up to assist women to overcome some of the barriers they face in establishing their businesses, such as English language skills, lack of social integration and low self-esteem. SWEEP will help senior women turn their business ideas into viable businesses.
Throughout the project over 156 senior women were engaged on the programme, and a further 25+ senior women accessed workshops and coaching which helped them to produce structured business plans and provide tailored marketing support.
In addition to this, SWEEP assisted in providing volunteering and placement opportunities for graduates to gain first-hand business and enterprise experience.
By providing bespoke training to each participant on topics such as creating marketing strategies and conducting PR campaigns, SWEEP nurtured the confidence, personal development and professional ethics of each woman enrolled on the project to develop their entrepreneurial and enterprise skills. With increased numbers of women developing their own businesses, it will result in a cultural change where more women feel confident and empowered to start their own enterprises.
“SWEEP provided a framework for an effective entrepreneurial model where participants piloted and tested their products while having access to administrative and business support services. With the financial support provided by RBS Inspiring Enterprise and the Nishkam Civic Association we exceeded and achieved all targets.
