Bhai Sahib Bhai (Dr) Mohinder Singh OBE KSG - Chairman

Bhai Sahib Mohinder Singh Ahluwalia is third in line of Sikh spiritual leaders of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ). Bhai Sahib holds two Honorary Doctorates for service to religious faith propagation, community service, education and research. He holds nine Chairmanships, and an equal number of Trusteeships; four Directorships; and three Patronships of different Organisations.

In the intra-faith context, Bhai Sahib is the Chairman of the British Sikh Consultative Forum for the past nine years (representing over 80 Gurudwaras and other Sikh organisations). He has had the privilege of conserving many historical places of worship / sacred shrines in Kenya and India. He is the first British Sikh to be awarded the title of ‘Bhai Sahib’ by the Jathedars of the five Takhats, jointly with the President of the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee.

Strongly guided by his Sikh Dharam principles, he actively engages in interfaith / inter-religious collaboration for international peace and harmony locally, nationally and internationally up to UN level. He is a coalition member for the proposed UN Decade for Interreligious, Inter-cultural dialogue, understanding and cooperation for peace, and is a member of some ten interfaith organisations. Internationally, Bhai Sahib is a recognised ‘Interfaith Visionary’, holding the Juliet Hollister Award from the Temple of Understanding whose past awardees have included His Holiness the Dalia Lama and Nelson Mandela.

For his services to religious faith propagation, community service, education and research, Bhai Sahib was awarded a PhD Honoris Causia from the University of Central England in 2002, and another Honorary Doctorate in 2006 from the University of Birmingham. In April 2012, Bhai Sahib became the first Sikh to receive a Papal Knighthood of St Gregory the Great in recognition of his dedicated work for Roman Catholic – Sikh relations and for his enthusiastic commitment to working for peace among people of all faiths.

Bhai Sahib serves Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha as its Chairman since the last 16 years. It is a registered religious charitable organisation with Headquarters in Birmingham. It has sister organisations in Leeds and London. GNNSJ is a local organisation with a global heart - it also has branches in India and Kenya. The Organisation’s motto is selfless service. It has five centres for excellence in Handsworth, an inner-city depressed area of Birmingham. Its subsidiary, the Nishkam Civic Association, was last year presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for outstanding voluntary services to the community.

Dr Upkar Singh Pardesi OBE - Vice Chairman

Upkar is Emeritus Professor of Enterprise Development and was formerly the Director of Corporate Social Responsibility (2008 to 2010) and the Dean of Birmingham City University Business School (1996 to 2008). He specializes in CSR, Marketing in SMEs and Entrepreneurship. He is currently the Chairman for MyEducation Global Limited (trading as MyEd and myed.com) and also CEO of Brodos.net System Centre UK Limited, a provider of online shop management system.

Upkar has been supporting local communities in Birmingham and West Midlands for 30 years and plays an active role in several social
enterprises and faith-based organizations. He is currently Chairman of The Drum, Vice Chairman of the Nishkam Education Trust (NET) and Trustee of Kyra Education and Training, a Catholic faith-based organisation.

Upkar was awarded the Officer of the British Empire (OBE), for services to higher education, in the in January 2006. In 2005 and 2007, Upkar was selected to be included in Asian Power 100 list, which recognizes 100 most influential Asian men and women in the UK.

Jarnail Singh Bhinder Non-Executive Director

Presently retired but has held long standing legal and managerial positions with BCTC, WMPTE, WMPTA, Travel WM and National express.

Over the years he has gained Knowledge and experience of the Courts and Employment Tribunals.

He holds an Honours Degree in Punjabi, a Scholarship in Religious Studies and various certificates in H&S and Public Relations.

Volunteer work includes working with the Citizens Advice Bureau, Governor of two local schools, NHS Trust Member and various roles within GNNSJ. He is also a Trustee of the  Nishkam Education Trust, member of the League of Friends at City Hospital, and member of the North West Neighbourhood Community Forum.

Gopinder Kaur Sagoo Non-executive Director

Gopinder is a postgraduate researcher at the School of Education, University of Birmingham. She has a degree in French and Russian from the University of Cambridge and a Masters from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

Formerly she held the position of PR and Marketing manager for a small, high-quality, cross-cultural children’s publishers.

A qualified teacher in adult education and now first-time mother, her interest in education spans early years through to higher education
and lifelong learning.

She has been a volunteer at GNNSJ for many years and her present volunteer work builds on a lifelong interest in promoting learning which draws on Sikh heritage.

Upkar Singh  Jheeta Non-Executive Director

Upkar is currently employed as the Senior Performance Improvement Manager for Midland Heart, one of the largest housing associations in the West Midlands.

He is a project management professional with extensive experience of general management, risk, audit and operations management. He regularly holds a voluntary Chiropody Clinic at the Nishkam Centre.

Previously a Delivery Manager for Working Links, a public, private and voluntary organisation set up to address the issues facing long-term unemployed people.  Upkar has many years’ experience in the field of social and economic regeneration.

He is also a qualified Chiropodist.
